Reading at North Crescent
At North Crescent, we believe that reading is an essential skill for children both to access Curriculum information independently and for them to develop their own appreciation for books and learning. We aim that our children will make rapid reading progress throughout the school so that they can move from ‘learning to read’ as they enter North Crescent to ‘reading to learn and reading for pleasure’ as they go through the school.
Our primary aim is to teach the children the phonetic skills they require to be able to blend words fluently. We use a programme produced and recommended by the Government called Letters and Sounds as the basis for our phonics teaching. This synthetic phonics programme is taught systematically throughout KS1 and into KS2 ensuring a consistent approach in every class.
